The Effects of Black
October 15, 2008

How do you feel when you look at this black strip above? Some of the more common reactions are; absence, fear, evil, death, or anger. In the Western part of the world, many people see black as a negative colour and often reffer to negative emotions when they are presented to it. We see the colour and fear the unknown of what it might be hiding. One might think, “What is the black covering? Is it dangerous, will it come out after us?”. People that think like this often reject that colour. However, not everyone thinks this way.
Other common conceptions of black are; power, sophistication, formality, elegance, or wealth. The people that feel this way absorb the black and feel invigorated by it. It is as though it powers them and gives them strength.
If you can, try looking at the black strip again and let it fill your mind. Concentrate on that colour and play a bit of your favorite music. Then let your imagination wander and see where it takes you. Whether you go somewhere you enjoy or somewhere that makes you uncomfortable determines if you reject or absorb this colour.
